This evening, eyes around the globe will be diverted to their TV screens as the 2012 Olympic kicks off in London with Opening Ceremonies.  We all know the athletes will flow through the tunnel into the center of the stadium, grouped by country.  We all know there will be a production of epic proportions —lots of lights, lots of dancers, and lots of music. We all know that beginning on Saturday, we will see he world’s fastest, strongest, most astute athletes put their heart and soul into their respective sports on the world’s largest stage.

But for all we think we know about the Olympics, it doesn’t take too much digging on the internet to realize that there is a heck of a lot that we don’t know —or at the very least, don’t realize.

So as we gear up for the 2012 Olympic season, we invite you to kick back with a bottle of your favorite Mezzacorona varietal, read this blog post, and enter your Opening Ceremony watch party with a slew of fun facts to share with you friends and family!

Did You Know … .

  • The Olympic rings cover every flag in the world?  They chose yellow, green, red, black, and blue because at least one of those five colors appears in every single country’s flag.
  • Gold medals have not been made out of pure gold in 96 years?  The 1912 Olympics was the last time that gold medals were solid gold.
  • That the 1908 Olympic games (Also in London!) lasted 1897 days? Yes, ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY SEVEN DAYS! They started in April and didn’t end until October!
  • The Berlin Games in 1936 were the first to be televised.
  • It wasn’t until 1900 that women were allowed to compete as Olympians.
  • Romanian Nadia Comaneci was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 SEVEN times in a row! She accomplished this at the 1976 Montreal Games.
  • The U.S. leads the Summer Olympics in medals, holding nearly 2,220!  Think we can continue the tradition this year?

Here’s to a competitive, thrilling, heart-stopping Olympic season! We at Mezzacorona raise our glasses to all the athletes who have worked diligently to get to this point in their career.  Cheers!
